What does a Registered Counsellor do?

What does it mean to be a Registered Counsellor? Not everyone knows what the term means. Well, our role is somewhat different to that of a psychologist. Registered Counsellors provide support for individuals and communities through containment, early prevention and psycho-education, as well as through interventions such as individual and group counselling and psycho-educational workshops.

Registered Counsellors provide counselling over a short period, usually between one and six sessions, working with clients’ current difficulties to get them through the immediate challenges they are confronted with. We examine thoughts, emotions and behaviours in order to increase personal awareness and self-confidence to optimise psychological wellbeing and mental health. This short and inclusive style of counselling is cost effective for the client.

An important differentiation is that Registered Counsellors screen for but do not diagnose psychopathology or prescribe any medication. That's the role of a psychologist, who we like to work collaboratively with if necessary.
